There’s a newcomer in our fleet — the Skoda Octavia. Here’s a car that’s as adept at transporting you in luxurious comfort in the back seat as it is at giving you a serious thrill from behind the wheel.A car that has built so many dreams is back and Skoda is very right to call it a legend. The Octavia was everyman’s dream car when it first came on the scene. The German efficiency, performance and build quality was out to impress everyone and with the new Octavia, Skoda has left no stone unturned.

The dashboard design is contemporary yet simplistic, following a beige and black colour combination. Surprisingly, there’s no faux wood on the dash at all. The audio unit has a piano black finish, while the climate control buttons are surrounded by matte black plastic. Faux wood is only seen on the center console and strips on the 4 doors. Luckily, Skoda has switched to black carpets on all its cars from the earlier beige, ensuring you don’t need to detail the interiors every few months.
The ARAI fuel economy figure of the Octavia 1.4 is 16.8 kmpl, it can achieve Mileage of 9.8-10.5 kmpl in the city and delivers 14-15 kmpl on the highways. The 1.8-litre petrol has an ARAI claimed figure of 14.7 kmpl, the car can do 8.5-9 kmpl in the city and 11.5-12.5kmpl on the highways. The most efficient Octavia is the diesel variant with a manual gearbox and an ARAI claimed figure of 20.6 kmpl Mileage. In real world conditions it can notch up to 12-13 kmpl in the city and 16-18 kmpl on the highways. The diesel engine mated to the automatic gearbox has an ARAI claimed figure of 19.3 kmpl, it can do 11-12.5 kmpl in the city and 15-17 kmpl on the highways.

The Skoda Octavia is offered with a 177bhp (17bhp more than before) 1.8-litre TSI turbo-petrol and the ubiquitous 2.0-litre turbo-diesel. The clean-cut looks appeal to a lot of people and the bold, clean strokes help give it a stance that is difficult to fault.Skoda is offering the 1.4 petrol with a manual while the 1.8 petrol will only be offered with a 7 speed automatic. The 2.0 diesel comes with both a 6 speed auto and a 6 speed manual.

The list of features is comprehensive. The Octavia will be available in 3 trim levels: Active, Ambition and Elegance. Not all engine options are available across the 3 trims. The 1.4L TSI engine will be sold only in Active and Ambition variants (no top-end Elegance). On the other hand, if you want the 1.8L TSI petrol, you’ll have to stretch for the Elegance trim. If you’re looking at the diesel mill with a manual gearbox, you get only Active and Ambition to choose from. Unlike the Jetta however, the diesel DSG is available in 2 trim levels, Ambition and Elegance. Having the AT on the middle variant is a smart move by Skoda as, in the D segment, the automatic + diesel combination is hot.

The Octavia 1.8 TSI offers the best of everything – power with economy and luxury at a relatively sensible price.
