I read a funny piece somewhere this morning about why Delhi is better than Mumbai. The difference in the lifestyle & culture between Delhi & Mumbai neatly framed around humour etched me to indulge in an age old debate. Which is better? Delhi or Mumbai! So this one comes straight from the heart of a true Bombayite expressing his love for the city & why Delhi can never match up to the class and charisma of the city that never sleeps; albeit with some sarcastic humour. And I chose to leave rule out a few things just because I do not want to rub it up even more on the Delhi wali junta.
1). Mumbai Has All The Jobs
Mumbai has always been the financial capital of the country. Be it the stock exchange or the 100’s of multinational companies that have made Mumbai their base. Why do you think people from all over the country flock to Mumbai? Mumbai in general is giving and very liberal. The reason why each day thousands of people add on to the already existing population of millions. People usually go to Delhi cuz it is on route to Shimla or Kashmir (Chuckles).
2). Mumbai Has All The Money.
Sure there is inequality on the streets of Mumbai but where else can see poverty and opulence living in harmony but Mumbai! Oh yea… We don’t need the free electricity. Delhi meanwhile is busy gathering funds from other states to better its infrastructure. What are they building now? A space shuttle for the Gandhi family?
3). Mumbai Has All The Glamour.
Mumbai is the heart of the entertainment & fashion industry of the country. Bollywood, Page 3 circles… Mumbai has it all. Delhi is busy buying floral shirts, velvet jackets and all the things that scream “Please look at me somebody!”
4). Mumbai Has Helpful & Honest People
If History has taught us anything about the people of Mumbai, it is the fact that Mumbai is home to the most helpful and amazing people you will ever come across. Be it the terrorist attacks, corrupt politicians or the wrath of the monsoons, the people of Mumbai always win. Delhi is still busy fighting the rickshaw wala for charging Rs.150 for a 1 kilometer journey.
5). Mumbai Has The Safest Streets.
I think it is safe to say Mumbai wins this one hands down. Where else can a girl roam around in an unknown locality at 2 in the morning searching for a midnight snack with a couple of girlfriends? Delhi police is at the end of its wits with the ever rising crime stats in the city. Guys, don’t be shy! Mumbai police is doing a better job than you. Just ask for help rather than money like you always do.
6). Mumbai Cuisine & The City That Never Sleeps.
Be it any part of the city or any time of the day/night, if you have the urge for a Pasta, Pista Ice-Cream or Chole Bhaturey at 3am, you will not be disappointed in Mumbai. Moreover, the options for a Mumbaikar when it comes to food and pretty much unlimited. From Vada Pav to Misaal to Burgers to Pani Puri or any street food you find in India. Umm.. Delhi has very limited options when it comes to the cuisine. And don’t even talk about a midnight snack in Delhi. The chances of getting mauled, robbed, beaten, groped or raped are much higher than getting a pack of Maggi noodles after 9pm.
