When my girls were younger they were obsessed with all things Toy Story. Even though they were three years apart, their love was equally matched and they would have watched those movies all day every day if I had let them!
So, a few years ago when we took them to Disneyland, the Toy Story-themed rides were obviously a big hit in our family. We told the girls that while we were at Disneyland, they could each choose one stuffed animal during the trip to take home with them. Unsurprisingly, the gift shop near Buzz Lightyear Astro Blasters was the store they loved most. But what DID come as a surprise was the stuffed animal they both selected: Wheezy.
My husband, Nate, and I did a double take. “Are you sure the ONE stuffed animal you want to get at Disneyland is Wheezy? And you BOTH want to get Wheezy? You’re SURE?” “Yes” was the answer we received from both Cate and Anna to all three questions! They loved Wheezy! They wanted to take him home! And, to this day, they both still have their beloved Wheezy stuffed animals.
Who can blame them? Wheezy is pretty awesome. And I loved so much that the character they were drawn to was this funny little penguin in a supporting role. It was just so darn cute.
With cold winter days around the corner, a penguin-themed treat would be a fun snack for the kids to enjoy while watching the movies. Enter: Wheezy’s Cheesy Penguin Crackers.
These crackers take a little bit of time to prepare, but they don’t require any fancy ingredients or equipment, so they’re simple and straightforward. My 4-year-old couldn’t help much with this project, so if you want to get the kids involved, know that it’s a better project for older children. That said, everyone loved the crackers and eating them was a blast — no matter your age! When I revealed the plate of crackers to my kids, I was met with many “awwwwws” because, seriously, these crackers are so cute.
Wheezy’s Cheesy Penguin Crackers
Prep Time: 20 minutes
- 15 large round crackers
- 4 thick slices white cheese (white cheddar, provolone, or Monterey jack are good)
- 1 1/2” – 1 3/4″ round cookie cutter
- Cream cheese
- Paring knife
- Black edible marker
- 3 thick slices yellow cheese (cheddar works well)
- 2 purple mini carrots
- Arrange 10 crackers on a serving platter.
- Cut 10 circles in the white cheese with the round cutter. Place 1 white circle on each cracker, arranging at the bottom of the cracker, using cream cheese as glue, if desired.
- Using the paring knife, cut out 10 pairs of eyes in the white cheese. The shape should be like an 8 with no holes cut in the center (see photo). Place a pair of eyes on each cracker situated above the white circle, using cream cheese as glue if desired. Draw black dots with the edible marker onto the eyes.
- Cut 10 small diamond shapes out of the yellow cheese. Place the yellow diamonds such that they rest vertically on the cracker, laid on top of the eyes and white body connecting the two, using a small dab of cream cheese on the tips of the diamonds as glue, if desired.
- Slice the purple mini carrots into discs. Cut a little triangle shape out of one side of the disc, cutting about 1/3 of the way into the circle, then cut another triangle shape opposite the original cut, to make a bow tie (see photo). Make 10 bow ties. Place them on the white circles on the crackers, using cream cheese as glue, if desired.
- Cut 10 pairs of feet. Start with a rectangular piece of yellow cheese that is 3/4 the width of the cracker. On the top half of that rectangle, cut a wave shape, so you have two humps. Place “feet” just below the crackers on the serving tray.
- With the 5 remaining crackers, cut little triangle shapes where one side is the curve of the cracker. Make 20 triangle shapes, then attach to the crackers using cream cheese as glue.
