Besides English, what makes a Bengali friend proud? Well, he is a grammar nazi and takes pride in flaunting it. Bengali woman are famous for fighting till they drop the hat from the head to prove a point on feminism and culture. Well, they are super correct about English and its wrong pronunciation can make them very angry and when it comes to some bengali words, they may lose our clam altogether if someone pronounces it wrong. Here are some of those:
Every non Bengali guy will say, Rasgulla and let me tell you this for once and for all, it is pronounced Ro-sho-golla. Bongs HATE it when it’s called Rasgulla.
After Rosogulla, the next sweetmeat name that is commonly mispronounced wrong by non-bengalis is Sandesh. NO! It is shon-desh and not sandesh.
3. Naariyal Paani
We Bengali’s simply don’t understand the logic behind calling daab as Naariyal Paani. We will always call it DAAB.
4. Pani Puri
Although there are more than 10 different names of Pani Puri in India, we love to call this street food as Phuchka and not Paani Puri. And by the way Phuchka is the true king of chaat, this whole golguppa and pani puri situation is an insipid alternative.
5. Fish or Macchi
Okay this is not a mispronunciation but more of a miss in understanding altogether. It may all seem and taste the same to you (probably because you eat the same stuff every time), but we cannot take it when someone calls fish as Macchi. Macchi is the entire specie and for us it is the specifics that matter. We talk Papda, Bhetki, Eelish, Katla, Mrigel, Koi and Chingri maachh.
6. Mishti doi
Known as Bengali sweet dessert, Mishti Doi is one of the most popular dishes in Kolkata where people from rest states call it as Dahi.
7. Mutton curry
Mutton curry might be your favorite cuisine, but you have been saying it wrong all the time. It’s Kosha Mangsho folks.
You may simply call this liquid as Tea but Bengali’s can’t rest until they drink some ‘CHA’.
And that is why we love to drink, Aamer Shorbot. We guys hate it when you call it as Aampaana.
