iPhone 7 Leak Reveals New Release Date

Apple fans, brace yourself for some disappointment because it looks like the iPhone 7 release will be later than expected…

The ever reliable 9to5Mac has attained information from a source at AT&T which reveals the iPhone 7 and the larger dual camera iPhone 7 Plus will not go on sale until September 23rd.

This contradicts information from last month by famed tipster Evan Blass (aka @evleaks) who said sales would begin on September 16th following pre-orders on September 9th. So, looking at this positively, you’ll have an extra week to save up!

One remaining question is if we will get just the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus or a third iPhone 7 Pro as well after these prototypes were revealed. Image credit: Nowhereelse.fr

Of greater substance is the fact AT&T’s leaked date ties in more closely with past iPhone release schedules. Last week Bloomberg attained information confirming a September 7th unveiling (the date I predicted a week earlier) and Bloomberg and Blass both expect pre-orders to begin on September 9th.

This slots in perfectly with the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus pre-orders began on September 12th and they hit shop floors on September 25th. The iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus, however were slightly quicker to market having been announced on September 9th, pre-orders opening on September 12th (again) and arriving in retailers on September 19th. That’s a 10 day gap versus the 16 day gap for the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus.

One reality check I would throw in at this point is the AT&T leak only refers to a “Merchandising Reset” – a period where employees spend time reorganising stores for new inventory and displays. That could be for something non-Apple related, but with all rival handset makers steering clear of iPhone launch dates, I can’t imagine what else that would be.

Either way at this point we know almost everything about the iPhone 7: its main specifications, camera changes, long awaited upgrades, most controversial omission and potential disappointments.

Now all we need is Apple to formally announce the iPhone 7 event. Based on past experience, that should be about two weeks in advance so we’re looking at the final week of August. If I had to guess, I’d say August 25th or 26th.

Now let’s just hope Tim Cook has a surprise or two up his sleeve and isn’t leaving all the goodies to the reimagined iPhone 8 in 2017…
