2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace leaked in overseas press

Images of the upcoming 2017 Volkswagen Tiguan Allspace, or Tiguan L in markets like China, have been leaked online ahead of the SUV’s debut at the Detroit motor show next month.

After being teased in sketches last week, these images published on autonocion.com, the images show the Chinese version, badged Tiguan L, with a longer wheelbase – which has been stretched by 110mm – and rear doors.

There’s also a longer rear overhang, and a reshaped C-pillar to accommodate the third row of seats.

However, the Chinese-market Tiguan L doesn’t appear to have seven seats, just a lot more legroom – it’s likely that the longer wheelbase is just to satisfy the chauffeur-driven tastes of the region.

The larger Tiguan will be known as the Tiguan Allspace in markets like Europe and likely Australia. It will be named the Tiguan L in China and simply as the Tiguan in the US – which doesn’t offer the regular short-wheelbase version already sold here.

When it lands in Australia at some point over the next 12-18 months, the Tiguan Allspace/L will compete with other three-row medium SUVs like the Mitsubishi Outlander and Nissan X-Trail, larger rivals like the Kia Sorento and Mazda CX-9, and even more premium offerings like the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

Following its global debut at the Detroit motor show in January, the Tiguan Allspace will commence its global rollout in the proceeding months, and is likely to reach Australia by the end of 2017.

It will likely serve as Volkswagen’s sole seven-seat SUV offering Down Under, considering the recently-revealed Atlas is left-hand drive only and the flagship Touareg remains a five-seat proposition.
